Even though many have seen it on TV most say "it won't happen here", I can handle it" and they find out they were wrong when it is too late. It is a quandry for emergency management as a whole because they are damned if they are wrong and people evacuate "for no reason" and they are criticised in situations like this when people were told to get the heck out of dodge but chose not to. ANYONE anywhere near water with even a possibility of storm surge geting near you should evacuate to higher ground as well as anyone not in a strong permanent type of home. That is why EM sets up shelters. They are not just for the homeless or less fortunate. They are for everyone and they are set up for a purpose-to save lives and give people a place to go when their homes are in danger. An example of what could happen is Hurricane Camille. If it had come into the Pensacola area, the home I lived in there, which was 17 feet above sea level, would have been completely under water!! Just look at what happened to the I10 bridge over P'cola bay and you know what can happen. Listen to EOM officials!!1 They do not tell people to evacuate just for the heck of it!!

A lot of those neighborhoods that were wiped out by storm surge were not thought of being threateded by storm surge, even in a cat 3 like Ivan. Some of those neighborhoods were not even told to evacuate.I don't blame them for staying becuase it's not their fault, how could they've known? These people are not idiots,if they would've known what was going to happen do you think they would've stayed???After seeing what Ivan did,i'm sure those neighborhoods will be empy when another hurricane threatens.

I was not being insensitive to anyone. No one called them idiots. I grew up in Gulf Breeze and know the entire Pensacola area quite well. ANYONE that lives very close to water knows they are subject to storm surge in any strong Hurricane unless they are completely clueless and pay no attention whatsoever to the weather and/or their surroundings. Note my example concerning Camille. We were not told to evacuate, but would have had she not continued on the path she took. I have sympathy for those who lost all, but unfortunately living on or near the water does have its' risks and those living in those areas should be well versed in what the consequences of living in their area could be. It is called taking responsibility for your own life and property.

It seems like we're away from that prespective...damaging floods in floodplains are called "acts of god" that no one could possibly be expected to anticipate much less be prepared for. TWC routinely shows a met. standing in MAYBE 50 mph winds at high tide on some beach where the waves are eroding /overtopping the dune hysterically declaring that all hell is breaking loose when what is happening is the normal geologic process that created the beach to begin with.

Radar........we are FAR from recovered. I am still not back in my house from Ivan and just getting a roof on this weekend. There are FEMA trailers everywhere and blue roofs. There are still debris piles and even houses that have not been touched since Sept 04.

This is very frustrating for me because I hear a lot of ignorance from some people. I was told to evacuate and I did, a lot of the calls you hear on that video were from areas that were NOT told to evacuate. They did follow instructions. People, I was here and I lost everything!! If you have not been through it and suffered the kind of devastation that we have then I highly suggest you rethink your judgemental comments about us being "idiots and stupid" I lost my children's pictures, baptism records, my first bible and every single other important, sentimental thing I owned. YES< I am rebuiding!! This is my home!! This is where I grew up!! I followed the instructions of EMS and NO-ONE.............NO-ONE expected this!! So, before you go name calling again you had better think about what you are saying. I would say that probably 95% of the areas that were told to evacuate did and those that stayed won't do it again. Somehow you are under the impression that we asked for what we got and I am apalled at that ignorance!!

This is not intended towards VB but towards those who have no inkling of what in the heck they are talking about. I respect VB and his knowledge. I am just tired of reading that I am an idiot, I do not take personal insults well, especially from people who do not have any clue who I am or what I am about. VB knows me well and is very well aware that I am far from being an idiot!! :) This just happened to be the thread that received my venom, there are many others that are deserving.

My rant is now over...............
very, very good post! I live in Pensacola, probably about 7-10 miles inland and we were affected. I know we weren't affected as bad as other's, but we still lost the whole privacy fence, a swimming pool, had to get a new roof. We also had numerous leaks, and have to replace alot a sheetrock inside the house..not to mention that Our garage also had alot of leakes too. We also lost numerous trees in this specific neighborhood (tornados it looked like) Not to mention that the yard was a complete mess!!

You say some crazy things sometimes Matt..

Anyway...I think its ignorant to not evacuate when told to do so & then call in the worst of the hurricane & expect others to risk their lives to help.

Did you even read what I wrote about those calls?? Those people were calling from areas that were NOT TOLD TO EVACUATE!! I live here, I know. These people did follow instructions! WHile I am not saying that there are not a lot of really stupid people out there who do not leave when told to but if you rely on EMS and follow their instructions and then end up in a life threatening situation, you need to call someone!! Think before you post please, and please don't post about things you ahve no experience with.

That why in my post I wrote"TOLD TO DO SO',which is as clear as crystal.

Follow your own advice & "Think before you post please"!

Or at least take the time to read the small 28 word post.

Gulfbreezer...that is REALLY interesting to me and I'm not being the slightest bit sarcastic. I'm interested in your opinion about this...If I'm not told to evacuate is that the same thing as an "instruction" NOT TO evacuate? Around here, shelters are generally not going to fill to capacity and the evacuation orders generally are worded to encourage ppl who are not specifically in the mandatory evacuation area but who believe they are still at risk to go to a shelter. Just curious how specific they get down there...I was in Gulf Breeze last year before Ivan and have friends there.

Cyclonaut,
First off, your post implied that those people on the video were ones who were told to evacuate and didn't, then called for help. I am not getting into this with you so BACK OFF!

Mitchell,
What is never in the media are the throngs of people here who evacuate whether they are told to or not. These are usually the people who have been here for a very long time and have seen the devastation in the past. The evauaction orders here are very specific when they are announced. For instance, I live on the south side of Hwy 98. The south side was evacuated and only specific sections of the north side. We have such an influx of new residents here that have never experienced any kind of tropical system. This presents a huge probelm when evac orders are handed down. Then there is also the problem of being in Gulf Breeze itself. There are very limited ways in and out of GB and GB is never completely evacuated, there are many areas here that the EMS considers safe. Those here who have been through many evacuations have made the decisions to stay in the safe areas or shelters here versus leaving the area simply because once you leave, it is extremely difficult to get back. The bridges here have to be inspected before anyone can cross them and it can literally take days and even weeks to be able to return if the situation is bad enough. It is a tough situation , no mater how you look at it but what makes it even worse is when people who have never experienced what we have seem to think it is okay to judge and resort to name calling. The posts that I have seen asking why we rebuild........well, I will answer that........we do not have a choice! Insurance money does not pay your mortgage off, nor does it give you enough to rebuild. Even if I had a choice, personally, I would not leave. This is my home, my whole family is here. It is no different than the millions of people who live in tornado alley, where they have maybe a 2-minute warning. I hope I answered your question.

BTW your post would have made me reactin the same way. The calls that Sandi was talking about were from those that were not told to evacuate. So you can see where the confusion originated from.

What did I say that was so wrong????

I find it wrong & ignorant when people are told to evacuate, don't do so & then call during the worst of the storm & expect other to risk their live becuase of their stupidity!

Notice I said "told to evacuate" & tell me whats wrong with my statement.

Are you saying its ok for people to ignore warnings & cause other to risk injury or death because of their negligence..Sheesh someone mis-interprets what I say & I'm the bad guy! :x

You are correct in what you said and maybe I did mis-interpret. The whole conversation started with the 911 calls that were being made by people asking for help. Your post seemed to imply that you were referring to those people. If I mis-read, then I am sorry. So, now that you have an apology for my assumption, consider the subject dropped.

As a moderator of this board, I try to let things roll off my back and unfortunately I let this get under my skin. PLease keep in mind that there are people here who did lose everything and compassion is really the only thing that we can offer, not insults and ridicule. Thanks and once again, I apologize for any misunderstanding.

Its cool,lets drop it.

I didnt know that those calls were from people that were not told to evacuate? The video started with footage of the storm & people calling in so I had no idea,I must have missed that part..Also one of the 1st posts in this thread was saying"EVACUATE, EVACUATE, EVACUATE" ! So thats where my confusion began.."I also didnt mean to seem insensitive when I said "If you didnt leave & you are in a mobile home & it breaks in half in the middle of the storm...Too bad"!

I dont want to see innocent people get hurt no matter what but it does upset me when people put themselves in harms way when they should know better.

Sorry for offending anyone...Believe I didnt mean to..
