I'm surprised I've read this on the British weather forum and not seen it on here.....
TAMPA, Fla., Feb. 4 (UPI) -- The director of the National
Hurricane Center said during a visit to Tampa, Fla., maps used to
publicize forecasts of the storms are changing.
Max Mayfield said the hurricane center in Miami will expand
forecast maps this year to include developing wind speed and size in
addition to the five-day window of probability now used, The Tampa
Tribune reported Friday.
"Strength and structure, or size, are very important,"
Mayfield said Thursday at the Windstorm Insurance Network's annual
conference.
Mayfield indicated adding information may make tracking maps
more complicated, but that won't stop the changes.
Mayfield also said a decision would be made next month on
whether to eliminate the line that shows a hurricane's most likely
path while retaining a wider cone to adjust for the frequent and
sudden changes a hurricane makes.
Mayfield said there is a heated debate over whether to drop
the so-called skinny line.
"There's no way you can please everybody," he said. "I
honestly don't care if we leave it in or take it out."
