Failing at 139KT, IMO, is acceptable since those events are very rare indeed (first time it has happened in the USA -- a gust that high from a hurricane -- since Iniki in 1992).

However, the failing from 115KT gusts DOES need to be addressed 25 years ago as these types of events are much more common

Derek, I was refering to the fact that the "official ob sites" are tending to fail before they get the full fury.

Are these instruments failing due to power loss or debris impact? Easy to solve the power loss issue but what about the debris impact? Watching the video of Charley I can understand an instrument failure due to debris impact. Doubt there is much that can be done about impacts.....MGC

MGC,

The failure can be attributed to both wind-driven debris and power failure. In most cases with strong 'canes, its both.
