Question about Surge on Pensacola Beach

#1 Postby PTrackerLA » Thu Sep 16, 2004 1:05 am

With the trajectory that Ivan is taking for landfall, it looks like Pensacola beach could be getting some of the worst surge. I have friends that own a condo on the beach (not in high rise) down there and they are very very worried that it will be totally destroyed by the surge. I've heard 15'-20' surge with the 30ft waves on top of that, could that be possible?

Quite possible for the surge to be in the 10-15 range with the waves at least 25 feet on top of that. During Camille, which landfalled about 100 miles West of Ivan I witnessed just that. The waves were overwashing the island in places and were at least 25 feet high.

They are anticipating severe surge at Pensacola with Ivan.

Do you know the details on the exact situation of the condo? Gulf front, location, etc?

The condo is located right on the gulf front with only protected by about a 5 foot dune. A beach renourishment project had been completed about a year or so ago which expanded the beach by hundreds of feet so hopefully that will make a difference.

*bump*

Still haven't heard much on the state of Pensacola's barrier island but I imagine it is has been devastated. Could be a while before we know the real extent since the bridge is closed.

The bridge to Pensacola Beach has a segment missing. The 3 mile bay bridge is closed due to erosion at one end. I am sure you have seen the pictures/video of the I-10 bridge. MSNBC has a reporter who stayed on Pensacola Beach and is reporting that it looks like a war zone.

Unfortunately, it's likely gone.

I loved that beach. The water was so clear, the beach was clean. At Fort Walton Beach where we actually stayed back in Mid-June the water was full of seaweed.

Also at Pensacola Beach there were a lot less people. I hope there's a beach left. :(

It's a beautiful island and beach that I've visited regularly for over 20 years, I sure hope there's something left :( .
