How large is this thing(miles wide)

#1 Postby ncsandman » Tue Aug 31, 2004 10:19 pm

Im new to this, but I was wondering if theres been any mention on how big this storm is? My local news hasnt said anything. The reason im asking, is because I own a trailer on the southern NC coast, and weve had our share of storms the last few years. I was just wanting to know if I should leave tomorrow, and prepare for the worst. By the way, Thank You so much for this site!!! Much more informed than Ive ever been about Hurricanes.

Roughly to 175 miles out with TS winds and 45 miles out with Hurricane strength.

Likely they haven't said anything because it's very, very unlikely Frances will landfall on NC.

I wouldn't recommend leaving, especially not this early.

On the other hand though...

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 70 miles...110 km...
from the center...and tropical storm force winds extend outward up
to 185 miles...295 km.

I'd put the CDO at ~300miles in diameter.

Thanks Bahamaswx, But I remember Floyd, and Hugo!! These things like to take a sudden northwest turn, and the NC/SC border seems like they invite them!! But theres not alot that you can do to stop damage in a 140 MPH storm!!! Just have to laugh to keep from crying!! LOL
