What's in store for SC/NC?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Also ... we will likely see scattered, maybe numerous (to possibly widespread) power outages across the region ...

I'm thinking that the windy conditions may be comparable to what we recieved in the Superstorm of 1993 ...

Well, in 1993 I wasn't here. What storm was that? My power always goes out. Maybe I should buy ice too.

I live 100 yards from a tidal creek. Do you think that will flood? I do live in a flood zone, but my house is elevated some.
I read the front page of the paper, but then another article stated how people don't seem to be concerned. Only the "newbies" are buying stuff at the stores.
This midwesterner isn't exactly sure what a storm surge even in! Will the Wando and COoper rivers flood too?

If you live in a flood zone, you always will have the potential for rising water to cope with during any tropical system. If you home is newer, it should have been built so that the floor is above the expected flood water level. Better safe than sorry. Take the time to make some basic preparations so you'll be ready if the weather is bad. I'm personally not expecting things to be all that bad here in NC. I'm on the coast about 5 hours north of you. Nor'easters can be worse than tropical storms, and we don't usually get much warning for those. Watch those tornado warnings, though!

I would ...

I would prepare for possibly having to go 24 hours without power ... during Floyd, we had solid tropical storm force winds, and ended up losing power after 11:30 pm, and wasn't restored until 9:15 am in the morning.

During the Superstorm of 1993 ... we had conditions with winds in the 30-50 mph range with higher gusts (peak gusts, Charleston WFO-72 mph, Charleston Downtown-81 MPH, Mt. Pleasant-82 MPH, My location-74 MPH) all day and there were scattered power outages, with some locations losing power most of the day ...

bonnie came with a fury last night here. Still raining and roads can't hold much on this island. They are predicting on the news this morning that we might get 10-15 mph winds. How could Charleston get more when we are further south?

If I was staying on HH, I believe I'd prepare for more than 10-15 mph winds. Heck, up in Faynam, we're looking at 34-40 mph. Since HH is certain to be on the East side, things will be considerably rougher there than here.

State employees are picking up all the trashcans and ashcans around state properties this morning so they don't blow away, and the fire department is packing and giving out sandbags. I have a co-worker whose house is on the penninsula & elevated, but she still moved everything to the 2nd story of the house last night just in case of storm surge/flooding. She's a Hugo veteran... Nobody is planning to evacuate, that I know of.
