7:30 AM CDT ATLANTIC BASIN TROPICAL UPDATE

#1 Postby vbhoutex » Wed Aug 04, 2004 7:28 am

Hurricane Alex with a central pressure of 973mb, or 28.72 inches, continues moving away from the East coast this morning and is currently moving in a North-Northeasterly direction at 18 mph about 280 miles East-Northeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina at 37.1N, 71.1W. Highest sustained winds associated with Alex are 90 mph with higher gusts. A gradual increase in forward speed is expected today. Tropical Storm force winds extend up to 140 miles from the center and Hurricane force winds extend up to 60 miles from the center. Alex is now a threat to only shipping interests.

Tropical Depression No. 2 is moving through the Windward Islands today and is located just East of the island of St. Lucia at Latitude 13.8N, 60.7W. TD2 has increased its' forward speed slightly and is moving West around 25 mph and has a central pressure of 1010mb or 29.83". However a decrease in forward speed and a turn more to the West-Northwest is expected today as TD2 begins to respond to the weakness in the ridge left by Hurricane Alex. Highest winds associated with this depression are 35 mph with some higher gusts. Tropical storm warnings are in effect for St. Lucia and a tropical storm watch continues in effect for Guadeloupe, Martinique, Dominica, St. Maarteen, Saba, St. Eustacia, and Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tropical storm Watches may be required for the Dominican Republic and Haiti later today. Continued development is expected and Tropical storm Bonnie may form
later today. All interests in the islands need to closely monitor the progress of TD2 and be prepared to take actions as warranted by its' continued development. A reconnaissance aircraft is en route to investigate the system this morning.

Another tropical wave located a few hundred miles West of the Cape Verde Islands has thunderstorm activity concentrated around a low pressure area, but shows no well defined circulation center at this time. Further development, if any of this system will be slow to occur.

Elsewhere, no tropical cyclone development is not expected in the Atlantic Basin through Thursday.
