Hurricane Week End!

#1 Postby Storm Man » Tue Apr 20, 2004 4:41 pm

Fri Aug 30th 1985 11:00 Pm.I just got off
work and went to the five o'clock club in
downtown Sarasota for a few drinks with the
boys. The radio just said don't worry about Hurricane Elena she was heading for Texas.
This disappointed me,I wanted a Hurricane
to hit here.Anyway be careful what you wish for! At this time I was Renting A House on Anna Maria island, gulf Blvd. Say 75 feet from the gulf.
My own private beach, man I had It made.
Sat Aug 31st 1:30 Am.The Police came in the bar, shut off the music and made this
anouncement,"If anyone in here lives on any
of the barrier islands you have two hours
to pack your belongings, and leave. We are
closing all bridges to and from the islands"!Wow this was not cool.I had a small car at the time.Have you ever tried
Packing 1,000 record albums,Tvs,stereo,
speakers,vcrs,tapes,toaster,coffee pot,
clothes,you name it into a 1980 pontiac
sunbird?During 50 mph winds and driving
rain? Its not EZ.Anyway needless to say
I left A few things behind. So I went inland and stayed with a friend. Now for
the fun part.My pal miss Elena wasn't going anywhere for awhile. We had feeder
bands every hour on the hour, knocking out
power, blowing down trees,For Three stinking days. She couldn't make up her mind where she wanted to go.
Mon Sept 2nd 1985 11:00 Am Returned home
Not! The things I left behind where gently
floating in the gulf of Mexico. The house
was standing but guess what? No floor.
A news reporter ask me If I knew who lived
here? I smiled and said no, "poor bastard"
Hopped in my over stuffed 1980 sunbird and
left. But here's the best part! Elena was a
cat 1,never got closer than 82 miles of
sarasota.I can't imagine a slow moving cat
4 or 5 Hurricane hitting the coast.I no
longer wish for a big hurricane hitting
anywhere near me.But a cat 1 or 2 will be
Ok LoL.
