There is an active volcano in Montesserrat.
depending on which way the winds blow, any of the islands are suscpetible to volcanic ash when it erupts.
I was waiting for a report by cylconeye. I guess PR didn't get too much or he would have reported in
but this is the latest advisory from NOAA:

In the dicussion in the above link they talk about the volcanic ash moving towards eastern Puerto Rico but PR being too far away from Monserrat around 290 miles to it's SE the ashes trend to dissipate before reaching Pr but the Sofrierre volcano did a major eruption a few years ago and plenty of ash came to Puerto Rico leaving all the cars very dirty and the BOOM was for the car wash places.

I thought PR was pretty far away to get ash but then you never know
the NOAA report says
SURFACE OBSERVATIONS FROM PONCE AND SAN JUAN PUERTO RICO
HAVE REPORTED ASH FOR THE LAST SEVERAL HOURS.
that's why I thoguht San Juan was getting some.
we got a heavy ash fallout from the volcano in July of this year

No Tom that was haze from a dust storm that originated inside africa that came out at march 3rd.That dust dissipated for the most part last week and only minor haze penetrated the caribbean.

Okay, Luis. I remember this post from you on Wednesday, March 3rd at 3:18 pm Eastern:
cycloneye wrote:During all this week windy conditions haved been felt in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the leeward islands as a very strong high pressure north of the islands has created a tight pressure gradient.Winds in the order of 20-30 mph sustained and in the high 30's and there was a report of a 41 mph gust in ST Croix. You can imagine how the high surf is north of the islands.Swells between 9-12 feet swells are crashing into the beaches here in PR north coast.By friday it is expected that the high pressure will begin to weaken some and move to the east permiting the swells to go down and the winds to subside. Also I haved noted some haze in the sky here maybe related to a new mild eruption today of the soufrierre volcano in Monserrat.
