Tropical Update: 12 Feb

#1 Postby senorpepr » Thu Feb 12, 2004 10:38 am

Sorry I didn’t get out a tropical update yesterday. I finally had a day off from work so I was busy with a bunch of random junk. Also, this will be my last update for a little bit. Tomorrow morning I’m heading out to Ohio for the weekend and should return late Tuesday night. In any event, over the course of yesterday, the Invest in the WPAC developed into a depression. 97P in the SPAC developed into Cyclone Fritz. It’s interesting to note that BoM Brisbane had upgraded this system into Fritz a few days ago. Was the JTWC influenced by this? It would be odd if they hadn’t had upgraded this wave and named the next system Fritz when BoM would have named it Grace. Interesting…

:rarrow: 1) CYC Fritz (12P): At 12/1500Z...
Position near 17.3S 137.2E 120nm WSW of Mornington Island, Australia)
Movement toward the WSW at 17 mph
Maximum sustained winds are 30 mph

Radar from Mornington Island indicates that Fritz has moved inland. Therefore, the JTWC has issued its final advisory of 12P. BoM Brisbane warns residents between Mornington Island and the Queensland border of the storm surge associated with Fritz.

:rarrow: 2) Invest (98S): At 12/0930Z...
Position near 18.7S 120.1E (Just E of Port Hedland, Australia)

98S has moved inland and is no longer considered a suspect area of tropical development.

:rarrow: 3) TD Noname (01W): At 12/1500Z...
Position near 12.6N 140.6E (240nm W of Agana, Guam)
Movement toward the WNW at 14 mph
Maximum sustained winds are 35 mph
T# numbers: 2.0/2.0

Latest satellite shows that the deep convection has weaken over the low-level center. Moderate diffluence and weak wind shear exist overhead. Expect 01W to slightly strengthen to 50 mph by the 36 hour forecast. Afterwards, expect a slight weakening trend.
