It really is just a matter of certain letters lining up with more active points of the season on average. I think starting each season with the letter A is an outdated practice, the general public won't notice if the WMO or NHC changed to a rolling combined list like the WPAC.

Does anyone actually in the Pro Met community know why this hasn't happened yet? What is stopping it?

One of the benefits of the current practice is that we instantly know how many named storms have formed in this season based on the letter alone. This is useful for comparison between different years.

How useful is this when any discussion of named storms is asteriked by ACE? Seems the emphasis on ACE as a more important factor makes that irrelevant. Other basins discuss comparison without needing their lists alphabatized.
