not sure on how to interpret details on the link but seems useful for this thread.
also is there a date for when GOES-19 is operational?
That's basically tracking the operational status of all the satellites and the sensors/instruments aboard the satellites. There has been no instrument or transmission failures from the satellites themselves (just the main data center that hosts the data for public use). There have been anomalies (the messages posted at the top) but those lasted ~20 minutes and were quickly corrected.
I believe GOES-19 was just handed over from NASA to NOAA and is currently undergoing post-launch testing and checkout of its instruments and systems. They had a post showing some of the data last week actually of the new instruments that measures solar flares (https://www.nesdis.noaa.gov/news/noaa-s ... instrument). Super cool that it was able to grab data from the last extreme flare that caused the aurorae visible as far south as Texas.
If all goes well it will become operational in April 2025.
Appreciate that info. I'm definitely curious about how space weather impacts the satellites ability to gather data on terrestrial weather. Alternatively, how terrestrial weather can impact gathering this data and we just saw with the recent outage. Sometimes those color anomalies will show up on the COD True Color global views and I always find it interesting when it happens and want to know more as to why.
Big space weather person here too and I know that the GOES satellites also take a look at the sun as well as the earth. Interested to dive into that information on the new instrumentation on GOES-19.
I found this short presentation interested from a retrospective that UNC-Asheville put for the 2014 floods. There is one talk specifically maybe speaks to some of the work that needs to be done to "fine tune" the various instruments before they go into operation to study terrestrial weather. It isn't specifically about the GOES fleet, but none the less I will take the opportunity to post it here as I find it relevant and educational! I will add the link below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqCmVQSyhHE
Also hello X 9.05 solar flare this morning!
