Any Thoughts on a Category 6 Classification?
So while we are typically used to the Saffir Simpson scale as maxing out at Category 5, I have personally heard suggestions that we should add a Category 6, especially after extraordinarily storms like Patricia, Irma, and Dorian occurred in the recent past. However, while I personally think that such would be redundant and that delineating the ">160 mph as Cat 5 and capable of catastrophic devastation" is enough to warn individuals in the danger zones of potential impacts and that adding another category above that would inherently cause individuals to downplay a regular Category 5 storm that is still very dangerous, do you guys think the same, or are there compelling reasons why a Category 6 should be added for, let's say for instance, storms at or stronger than sustained winds of 185 mph?

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.

The Safir-Simpson scale was introduced to measure wind damage for insurance companies. After 155mph, wind damage is catastrophic and the differences negligible. To answer your question, as it has been asked many times... no. We don't need a cat 6.

My opinion is no, but I do feel that as the years go on and climate change causes more powerful storms to occur (and increasing in intensity), then there might be a case for adding C6. But right now no.

LMAO, best post of the season

Funny too, because I was just contemplating starting a new thread "Which Dead President Would You Pick to Chase a Cat. 5 Hurricane With"? The whole Cat 6 question might totally change up my thinking for that though
