40TH ANIVERSARY OF HURRICANE FLORA

#1 Postby AussieMark » Mon Oct 06, 2003 4:50 am

On October 4-8 it was the 40th Anniversary of Hurricane Flora. One of the strongest and deadliest hurricane in the Caribbean....Ever.

She left approximately 8,000 people dead.

Dropped about 40 inches of rainfall on Cuba alone...which led to unprecedented flood damage to Cuba and Haiti which led to the massive death toll

If anyone has any info could they add it.

WOW

I wonder why there was so much flooding there. The loop. That alone was over a day or so, maybe more. That with a full blown hurricane, wow.

Thanks for that info.

And then it just turned and ran away in the opposite direction. Sort of a deadly game of "knicky, knicky nine doors."

40 inches of rain? It's a wonder Cuba didn't sink into the Carribbean forever.

Wasn't it Flora that lingered over Cuba for 5 days because it was boxed in by HIGHs to its north, east and west?

I'll check the TPC archives.

Abajan, it sounds logical that a high was to Flora's north, east and west. Larry had a high pressure on two sides of "him" and he moved extremely slowly to the south and southeast.

I read some isolated areas reported 90 inches of rain, I think near Bayamo (sp?). Couldn't imagine a full hurricane sitting over you for 4 days.
