5 PM EDT update on Olaf....

#1 Postby WXBUFFJIM » Mon Oct 06, 2003 3:56 pm

Good evening everyone. Olaf was a hurricane earlier today. However it was downgraded from 75 mph to 40 mph earlier today. However Olaf has shown signs lately of reorganizing and is getting stronger as it approaches the west Mexican coast. All of the hurricane warnings have been dropped. However tropical storm warnings are in effect from Punta San Telmo to Cabo Corrientes, Mexico. A tropical storm warning means tropical storm force winds of 39-73 mph are expected within 24 hours or less in or near the warned area.

At 2 PM PDT, Olaf was centered about 55 miles south southwest of Manzanillo. It was repositioned farther south and east earlier today. Thus Olaf is closer to the west Mexican coast at this time.

Olaf is moving north at near 6 mph and a turn to the north northwest is expected this evening. On this track, Olaf will be close to the west Mexican coast later this evening.

Olaf has become better organized from where it was earlier today with maximum sustained winds presently near 50 mph with higher gusts. Some additional strengthening is a possibility as the center approaches landfall later this evening and overnight. Minimum central pressure with Olaf is 1000 mb or 29.53 inches.

Rainfall totals of 4-8 inches with locally higher amounts are expected to occur in the tropical storm warning area.
