Well JB is one of those people that I love to hate....I like watching his video - don't pay to get his columns.....But to me its his personality that comes through - He is the Joe Bastardi persona.....most of the time in a comical nature. I have learned a few things from him as I do with all mets. As with every other met on the internet, local tv and radio - forecasting weather will never be an 100% accurancy and I think that JB is another fish in the pond......

BTW - how many of us know in person (besides other professional mets who know the guys & gals at NHC) and have an on the air persona??? We don't .... all we know is the personality they show us in their discussions and updates and how much can they do in that??? Just a thought....

wxman57,

Sorry about that. I wasn't clear on Larry. I was giving him credit for the call for development 2 weeks out. He blew the end game.

To me, the value of Joe really comes from the influences, teleconnections, indexes, pattern recognition theories and all. He's taught me a ton of stuff over the last 4 years, some of which has served me pretty well in understanding the weather.

He and InAccurate Weather love to trash the NWS and he in particular jump all over the NHC. That alone gets him quite a following on here and other boards. These guys in State College would love nothing more than to privatize the weather service, get rid of the NWS and charge you for the same services provided. I do enjoy reading Joe for a laugh but then again I like Dilbert too.

It appears to me that JB is a pattern forecaster - he's looking way out and, yes, that means that every scenario is still valid and, yes, when he gets one right, he's really right from some time back.

What a lot of people seem to miss is the number of times when he compliments NHC and how he will fully admit when he is wrong. This happened last Thursday (I think it was) when he realized that Larry was not going north. He not only complimented NHC but also took responsibility for his own error. Plus, he jumps in and figures out why he was wrong telling his readers about it. His archival summaries on storms frequently have the "I thought this but I was wrong" line to it.

On top of everything, how many top meteorologists can you email a question and actually receive an answer back? I sent him an email back early in the season about something I had read on this board. He not only answered me but also covered the same topic in the next tropical update.

Yeah, that's what I thought you meant, Steve. But it was pretty clear to see from way out that the western Caribbean/Gulf was the place to watch. JB's good with identifying patterns. And patterns are more important than numbers (see my signature).

I do not know JB and have not had any contact with him, email or otherwise, but a good friend of mine is often in email contact with him. I think a lot of people would be surprised at the "real" persona of JB. He is a very religious person and does not hide it in his emails to my friend, nor am I saying he doesn't show it since I can't say anything about what I do not witness personally. It does not mean he is a better Met because of it, but I personally find it very refreshing to know that. But like has been stated before, he has to sell his product, so my guess would be there are two different persona's, not people, persona's.

I hope that those who criticize Joe B. are not criticizing him personally. My problem is that the reason he has the persona is he has the apearance of grandstanding with his discussions. This maybe just my perception. Lets face it, I have a big problem with an organization doing what they call a public service, then charging you $14.95 a month when they see they can make a buck. Capitalism rules I know, but Accuweather comes off as profit hungry in a business that can have huge effects on people everywhere. That tends to turn people off. Right or wrong, Joe B. is the face of that organization but in his defense, when someone post his discussions, who on here doesn't read it? Hmmm...!

The posts or stuff said are NOT an official forecast and my opinion alone. Please look to the NHC and NWS for official forecasts and products.

Model Runs Cheat Sheet:
GFS (5:30 AM/PM, 11:30 AM/PM)
HWRF, GFDL, UKMET, NAVGEM (6:30-8:00 AM/PM, 12:30-2:00 AM/PM)
ECMWF (1:45 AM/PM)
TCVN is a weighted averaged

Opinions my own.

This is similar to what psychics do.

Just a thought.
