Juan Weakening Fast - Moving Inland

Juan's center is right on the coast of Nova Scotia not far from Halifax now. Below are the latest obs from Halifax. Max wind so far 25 kts gusting 41 kts. NHC is just estimating that winds are still just over hurricane force, mostly as a precaution. Over such cold water, it is weakening fast. Good thing for Halifax...

Good thing that Juan has weakened so much but there will likely be some damage with the winds gusting to near hurricane force. How often is Nova Scotia affected by storms?

Actually I was just looking at some historic tracks and it doesn't seem like it's very rare for Nova Scotia to see Tropical Storms. Hurricanes, however, seem quite rare. I believe Juan is supposed to be the worst since Hurricane Ginny (1963)... Cat2.

I just saw a report on the Canadian Wx Bureau site of winds at Halifax sustained at 56 mph, gusting to 86 mph (90 kph, gusting to 137 kilometers per hour); also a newswire report that 96 mph gusts were reported earlier in downtown Halifax along with buildings damaged and widespread power outages.

There have been a number of tropical storms and hurricanes to make it north of 42.0ºN over the years.

Tropical cyclones usually, if not always accelerate northward.

I used to live a few miles south of the 42.0ºN latitude line and experienced Hurricane Gloria (1985), Tropical Storm Henri (1985) and Hurricane Bob (1991), Floyd (as a tropical storm) in 1999 plus the northern portions of others over the years.
