Terrible evac timing for Nova Scotia
Just heard on TWC that Nova Scotia has just now started mandatory evacuations. Thats great, but only 24 hours too late. Wont get everyione out of Halifax, a city of more than 350K in just 90 minutes

1) Being TWC, it's highly likely they have bad or misquoted info; possibly discussing evacuations that began long ago.
2) I'm 99.999% sure there's no attempt to evacuate the entire city of Halifax, just low-lying areas near the harbor.
3) Given the likely construction of housing in Halifax and their proclivity for powerful winter storms, I'd say the danger of life-threatening wind damage is nil.
4) It's not another Hatteras because Nova Scotia is not a barrier Island that's 5 millimeters above sea level.

Agree strongly with that; I think I said some time a few days ago, that Nova Scotia has taken hits from winter storms worse than this, and mentioned the elevation in this afternoon's forecast. Probably won't be much of a big deal.

Well, lets just wait and see what Juan does before we start jumping guns.
I personally think the Canadians don't have too too much to worry about. Yes they'll get wind whipped, yes they'll get rain. But loss of life is probably going to be next to zero if not quite zero.
If I'm wrong, let god strike me with lightning.. and I apologize early to the Canadians

TWC had the deputy manager of Halifax EOM on at 9 p.m. and the evac is for people lower than 2 metres above sea level on the coast.
Also, they did show pictures of halifax and there is a lot of construction right on the coast, literally sky scrapers on the beach
should be a tidal surge event only though as the winds are weakening as the storm approaches
