Poll: 2016 North Atlantic Hurricane Season: Any more developments or nothing more?

#1 Postby cycloneye » Sun Oct 23, 2016 2:15 pm

As October comes to an end and the last month of the season November comes, the question is if something will develop or is over.

Poll closes on October 31rst at 3:15 PM EDT.

I say one more.

I'm thinking two more.

A western caribbean storm and then an open atlantic storm, kinda like 2001 with Michelle and Noel/Olga

Been a weird year in many ways. 80s to near 90 in the central and eastern states in late October?

Nothing to base it on, but I wouldn't be surprised if a Whopper showed up.

Pretty much what I was thinking just as Nicole was beginning to spin around, but boy have things really seemed to have dried out over the Atlantic. I ended throwing my vote toward one more simply out of how sickly the Caribbean and Atlantic have suddenly began to look. Things could change of course and getting "some subtropical spin-up" in the Central or N. Atlantic seems not all that hard to do these days. Well, we've just GOT to have an Otto (just because I like that name for a T.S.) plus I already voted. So i'll put my money where my mouth is lol, and take it one step further. Tropical Storm Otto will form in the W. Caribbean between Nov. 2-5!

I'm with you on this. I guess I voted for two more because we're currently in a weak La Niña. But we'll see how it goes.

I am thinking one more in the mid latitudes off the East Coast. I was thinking maybe two a few days ago but I don't think the Carribean will be hospitable despite the Nina.

Given the MJO forecasts, I'd bet on one more storm forming sometime in early to middle November in the Caribbean, putting the season at 15/7/3.

Looking at the GFS 10-day, I think we are done - so much for a La Nina season. Except for Matthew it was fairly quiet...

Quiet? This was an above average season and the most active since 2012. Also had the most major hurricane days since then. This season was anything but quiet

Here's some interesting figures that I just put together. Thus far this year the Atlantic basin has had 14 Tropical Storms form. Based on data over the prior 164 recorded Atlantic Hurricane Seasons, there were only 23 other years where 14 or more Tropical Storms formed during those years. Of those years, 21 of 23 had one or more tropical storms that formed on or after today's date - Oct. 25 (the exceptions being 1990 & 2012 with those seasons having ended prior to Oct. 25).

Of course it should go without saying, years aided by satellite data might well skew the above analysis but these numbers are simply based on the data at hand. Interestingly, 14 of the 23 prior years having 14 or more designated Tropical storms occurred since 1990 - a short span of the past 26 years. Perhaps even more curious is that 11 of the 23 prior years having 14 or more Tropical Storms occurred during the recent span of the last 16 yr's. (since 2000). Aside from the fact that the satellite era has provided a broader awareness of tropical storms that occur in more remote parts of the far East, Central and North Atlantic, another take away from these numbers might suggest a "changed" or "lowered" benchmark for tropical storm designation as well.

I'm thinking two more - one of which will be a hurricane, potentially major.

Count me in on the 2 more systems bandwagon.

One could be a hurricane, I have a gut feeling that November could be huge for some strange reason.

In a more realistic sense, we may get to see one or two depressions or tropical storms that go OTS. But just like some people in here, this season "feels" strange, so I'm leaving room for a possible freak major (something along the lines of Hurricane Kate, Lenny, and Michele) that may or may not affect land. I know chances are very low, but there's still always that minuscule possibility.

I'm expecting one or two systems of extratropical or subtropical origin, maybe one of them will transition to tropical. Probably somewhere in the mid-Atlantic possibly as far east as the Azores as we've seen the models hint at off and on throughout the month. Not really expecting anything substantial and nothing likely to cause any significant effects.
