Tropical storm in Bay of Biscay (France) on Sep 15th 2016?

#1 Postby TheEuropean » Sun Sep 18, 2016 6:57 am

Hello,

on thursday (Sep. 15th) a extratropical low in the Bay of Biscay west of France transformed into a subtropical or even tropical system with a clear eye visible. It made landfall on northern coast of spain with guts up to 83 mph.

Full report about this low / storm (german language):

Sorry about text in german, but there are many graphics and a photo inside the eye. System had a clear eye, a warm core, loses its fronts. Foe me this has to be a tropical system, what do you think about it?

Regards, Thomas

Looks somewhat subtropical to me. The eye is very large and ragged, and it has more extratropical characteristics than tropical characteristics. But this is just my opinion, I'm no expert. Very cool nonetheless.

I am only a tropical weather enthusiast. My predictions are not official and may or may not be backed by sound meteorological data. For official information, please refer to the NHC and NWS products.

I saw this as it formed---I'm thinking this was definitely subtropical, if not even tropical. There's a phase diagram of it somewhere on the net---it was a warm core system.

Would the NHC ignore this in post-analysis of the season due to its proximity to Europe?
