Here's several awesome radar images taken by the NOAA research team from onboard their reconissance aircraft in hurricane Isabel's eye...radar shots from yesterday and today.

Thanks, Perry. They are pretty awesome. It certainly appears from today's run that there is an almost due west movement. Of course, they were from earlier in the day but it doesn't seem to jive with the updates we've been receiving. Obviously, I'm missing a key component here but it's late so please forgive me. On reviewing some of the other information on the Isabel page (thanks much for this link), I found some of the flight plan/flight results information. For one of the P-3 flights, this was found:

N43RF had three separate penetrations into the large eye and was able to execute a complete step-descent pattern about 70 n.mi. ENE of the center, both upwind and cross-wind patterns, down to 200 ft.. The crew was able to collect excellent BAT probe, CIP probe, and radar data, as well as great video and digital photographs.

Absolutely amazing. Those had to have been white knuckle flights.
