Is the MJO underrated?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Is the MJO underrated?

#1 Postby Kingarabian » Sat Aug 25, 2012 4:21 pm

Only until this season I found about the MJO... And not much people know of it and it's affects.

Question is: Should the MJO be getting more attention (more analysis, research, etc)? I mean once it gets active it can jump start a dormant basin!

The MJO is one of the biggest phenomena to occur in the tropical region of the globe and is overlooked because during tropical season people love to point "hey the waters are insanely warm something's gotta form!" They forget that the waters are always warm most of the season and the atmosphere is the key to what works and what doesn't. Think of the MJO as a large monsoon area that travels the global west to east. Noaa has a good write up for it.

There was a scientific paper showing something like 70% of major hurricanes occur when the MJO is in phases 1 and 2 but I couldn't find it on google.
