#1 Postby HurricaneJoe22 » Tue Aug 21, 2012 12:53 am

From the Miami Herald:

Events planned to commemorate 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew

Friday and Saturday

Homestead Mayor Steven C. Bateman and the City Council are inviting the public to a weekend of history and celebration Friday and Saturday.

Families of Homestead’s earliest pioneers will be present to share their stories of challenges faced during the early days of homesteading in South Florida as well as during Hurricane Andrew 20 years ago, an important point in Homestead’s history.

Events will include a $10 cocktail reception at 8 p.m. Friday at the Community Center, 1601 N. Krome Ave., and a free festival in historic downtown Homestead from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday.

For more information, contact Homestead steering committee chair Yvonne C. Knowles at 305-323-6564 or email ycknowles@aol.com

• The Aftermath of Hurricane Andrew from 3 to 3:45 p.m., with Kate Hale, the former director of Miami-Dade Emergency Management, and Richard Ford of the Salvation Army Disaster Relief Team.

• Tropical weather briefings at the Magic Planet at 11:45 a.m., 1:15 and 2:45 p.m.; kids’ activity stations where visitors can tell their Andrew stories and write their experiences on cards to be placed on a pinup board.

Visitied the Homestead area with some friends about 3 months after "Andrew" had hit; the damage was unbelievable! Homestead was just wiped off the map!

For anyone interested, below is URL to my personal write-up of my encounter with Andrew; which started in Homestead, but ended up in the northern eyewall, near Cutler Ridge, Florida- where gusts of 175 mph occurred.
