Hurricane Convention?

#1 Postby micktooth » Sat Feb 19, 2011 9:08 pm

Hi All, I recently attended the National Storm Chaser Convention in Denver, it was great. I was wondering, are there any Hurricane Conventions that are open to the public? Hurricanes are my passion and I'd love to attend a conference. Thanks everyone for your advice.

And I would be helpful to have the dates in the countdown as well-http://www.storm2k.org/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=110434

I've never heard of one, but I'd be lying if I said that idea didn't sound really awesome. :P

The 30th Conference on Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology should be in May sometime on the East Coast, but I cant remember if this is one of the conferences that only occurs once every other year or not.

That one is every 2 years. I attended it last year in Tucson, AZ. Next one is 2012, but the location hasn't been announced. It's not open to the public, though you can attend if you register and pay the fee (a few hundred dollars).

The only free public conferences are put on by local communities. Houston has a free public conference each May or June in the George R. Brown convention center. Bill Read will be a speaker this year, I believe.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I don't mind if I have to pay to attend, I was just wondering about some conferences that were open to enthusiasts and not just pro Mets.

I am not aware of any that is closed to non-meteorologists. All it takes is payment of a registration fee to attend any of the AMS conferences, the Interdepartmental Hurricane Conference, or the National Hurricane Conference.

LSU usually has something once a year but I'm not sure how detailed or in depth it is. I was intending to go last year but the event (LSU Day) was canceled due to bad weather (a lot of the events take place outdoors). They rescheduled but I never heard if the seminar or whatever you would call it was being moved. If I find out they are doing it again next year AND I know they have someone doing something on hurricanes then I will go.
