Today in History: Hurricane Camille

#1 Postby WX5DBZ » Tue Aug 17, 2010 10:21 am

Today markes the 41st Anniversary of Hurricane Camille making landfall in Pass Christian, MS. Official maximum sustained winds recorded during the storm were 190mph with possibly much higher gusts (gusts estimated at 200mph near the coast). Storm surge was 24 feet and was the standard for all hurricanes prior to Hurricane Katrina, almost exactly 36 years later.

I was a 6 or 7 year old child living 120 miles north of the coast. Winds were recorded at a small airport nearby of 120 mph. Blew a portion of our roof off. Trees flattened everywhere. Absolutely the most terrifying event in my life. I am perhaps unnaturally afraid of these storms to this day. I'll sit through a low end 3, and have a couple of times, through the eyewall, but if there's a monster sitting south of us, my family hits the highway.
