Re: Storm Stories tonight: Hurricane Camille
Thank goodness the "hurricane party" myth continues to be discredited. It simply didn't happen, yet for 20+ years after the storm, the story kept getting attention. NOVA even included it on its 1988 special on Hurricanes.
Anyone know when the re-analysis of Camille will be done ... or has it been done? I don't think it has, but I'm not sure. The question always comes up as to the strength of this storm at landfall. I've read anywhere from 150-190 mph sustained winds at the coast. My guess would be closer to 160-170 mph at Mississippi landfall. The estimate by recon aircraft on that Sunday afternoon was 190 mph and 901 mb. These numbers have been seriously challenged. I think the official lowest pressure is now 905 over water, and 909 at landfall.
If you're interested, the NHC Storm Wallet Scanning project is a great source for original documentation on storms from 1968-1983. Notable hurricanes like Camille have loads of materials to view. You can even read about Hurricane Debbie (same year) and the "seeding" project (StormFury). Go to: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/storm_wallets/cdmp/
and enjoy.

Check out the radar of Camille from Pensacola. The hurricanes eye looks like a ring of fire. Cat 5 when this picture was taken for sure......MGC
