4 years ago today to the hour

I remember that on 2005 my osession with weather was growing, I went to sleep the night before but I woke up at 3 am local time and watched CNN, I remember watching a very unfrogattable scene with very powerfull winds, were flying everywhere, then I slept again and in the morning I continued watching the news and the first reports from New Orleans were that the superdome was damaged but that was it, no flood, no surge, so I went to high school thinking that it was not as worse as predicted. When I came back home, the truth was beginning to unveil, reports from New orleans completely flooded, and several cities on LA, Mississippi and Alabama with very heavy damage, very sad reports taht I will never forget.

Last night we went out with some friends and were reminiscing about where we were 4 years ago. Our friends' daughter was married the day before Katrina and we were all at that wedding. Some spent the morning before the wedding prepping homes; some did that afterwards. The reception hall had a TV in the lobby and we kept slipping out there to check on the storm. The next day, as the bride and groom were on their honeymoon (they just did manage to get out of town before the storm hit), some of our friends lost their homes to the storm surge in the south part of Mobile County while we lost our chimney and part of the roof. Some of those who lost their homes had to escape the flood waters through windows and wade to neighbors' homes on higher ground. Then it was a nightmare. Now, with homes repaired/rebuilt, it's stories to remember and tell to children and grandchildren. In some ways it seems like just yesterday it all happened, but, paradoxically, it also seems like decages ago. I pray we will never face another like Katrina again.
