From reading the missions page of the AFR Hurricane Hunters, I understand they occasionally drop buoys out in front of hurricanes in the predicted path. Would it be feasible (or safe) to drop one in the eye of a hurricane? Drifting buoys in the path of the storm can easily miss the core...while one right in the eye, while the aircraft circles inside to ensure the safe drop and closure of the back ramp prior to penetrating the wall again, would be certain to hit some portion of the core. The data obtained would be insane.
The buoy could be designed to be reusable and once the hurricane has left the area, the buoy could be recovered by a ship, with the data downloaded from the internal devices (encase transmissions go down).
