Rapid development possibilities

#1 Postby Portastorm » Mon Jul 14, 2003 12:53 pm

Looks like Claudette is trending more NW now with her movement.

Any thoughts on some "explosive development" before she makes landfall tomorrow?

Given how I've seen some systems blow up shortly before hitting the Texas coast, I wonder .... (but hope it won't be the case).

With all the things that Claudette has done, I wouldn't be surprised if she did intensify rapidly between now and landfall tomorrow. Looking at the latest satellite images, it looks like she is now forming an eyewall, another sign of strengthening.

Claudette will not make landfall as early as tomorrow. She will have to really speed up and definately have a west-northwest to westward movement for that to be possible.

I think she will head more of a northern direction, I'm not sure.

If that's the case (landfall not until late Tuesday or Wednesday), it's all the more reason to be concerned about Claudette winding up before she makes landfall. More time = ample opportunity.

I agree...she isn't moving very fast...which is why I feel really bad for where this thing makes landfall...slow movement = LOTS and LOTS of rain.

Explosive deepening is always a concern with SST off the Texas Coast running 29-30° (84-86°F); especially with a compact storm such as Claudette. It honestly won't surprise me if sustained winds are 100 mph or more at landfall.

On visible, she still seems to be inching nw or nnw and she now looks like a cane and not just a blob.

Maybe a bit of good news for Coastal Texas residents.....I've noticed the SW shear is increasing over Claudette (evidence of cirrus blowoff on the latest visible image). It may not be enough to keep Claudette below hurricane strength -- but might keep her sustained winds at 75 or 80 mph instead of 100 mph or more.
