Typhoon names that should have been retired

#1 Postby HurricaneBill » Mon Jul 14, 2008 11:16 pm

I know it would have been impossible to retire typhoon names. They would have quickly run out. But there are storms that I definitely would have retired.

Here's a list of typhoons that I think should have been retired from 1945 to 2008.

No Typhoon Nina (1975)? 175,000-200,000 death toll seems pretty large.

Rita should have been retired in 1972. I know of at least three Irmas that should have been retired and Gay in 1992. Supertyphoon June 1975 also-it was June's record that Tip broke and June started in fairly low latitudes. I don't see STY Wilma from the early 1950's on the list-that storm claimed the first recon crew to go down in WPAC. Bess in 1974 WAS retired because we lost a WC-130 in that storm in the SCS.

Another typhoon that seemed to stay despite good enough reason for retirement: 2005's Talim. $1.5 billion damage, and 150 deaths.

1988: Typhoon Ruby
Typhoon Skip

My ship, the USS Chuck Wagon (CVN-70) sailed near the perimter of Skip near the South China Sea. Don't normally notice waves/swell on a Nimitz class carrier, but we did. Escort destroyers looked like they were having a fun ride. Some damage to antennaes, and a hole was knocked in the skin of the ship above the waterline near the foc's'le.

I think the reason most of these names were not retired was that prior to 2000 Typhoons were named by the JTWC, and countries the storms affected had little say in the storm names.

Anyways in addition to the list above I would have retired these names as well:

1945- Typhoon Louise

1947- Typhoon Pauline

1948- Typhoon Ione

1949- Typhoon Della
Typhoon Kitty
Typhoon Rena

1950- Typhoon Jane

1951- Typhoon Ruth

1952- Typhoon Trix

1953- Typhoon Tess

1954- Typhoon June

1959- Typhoon Georgia
Typhoon Iris

1960- Typhoon Shirley
Typhoon Kit

1961: Super Typhoon Nancy

1962- Typhoon Wanda

1964- Typhoon Ruby

1966- Typhoon Ida

1967- Typhoon Billie

1969- Typhoon Elsie

1972- Typhoon Kit

1974- Typhoon Nina

1979- Typhoon Hope
Typhoon Irving

1981- Typhoon Kelly
Typhoon Irma
Typhoon Lee

1982- Typhoon Nancy

1985- Typhoon Jeff
Typhoon Nelson

1987- Typhoon Thelma

1989- Tropical Storm Vera

1990- Typhoon Yancy

1991- Typhoon Yuri

1993- Typhoon Lola
Typhoon Manny

1995- Typhoon Zack

1996- Tropical Storm Greg

1999- Typhoon Olga
