hurricane power

I was wondering with the power that hurricanes generate in their wind process has there been any scientific research into applying this for commercial uses? I'm not talking about harnessing hurricanes for power use but the process by which they use to gain their strength. With the current debate over alternative fuels I wonder if any research into this area could help. Just a crazy observation.

So far their is no way to harness the power of hurricanes. Nevertheless, if in the future this power is harnessed, this will be the first time that a renewable source can provide energy for the entire planet all year around without the fear of being depleted like forests are today.

I believe that's already been done. Hurricanes gain their energy from the latent heat of condensation - the heat that's released when water vapor condenses into liquid water. A similar process is used in heat exchangers to heat/cool your home.

Excellent point, wxman57; if there's any chance of a truly unending and unexpendable source of energy for this planet it will be solar--at least as far as the life of the solar system and Earth itself are concerned.
