Best Track has Allison as a TD at the time when NHC said "Tropical storm formation is not expected through Wednesday"

Yeah...I remember sitting at my desk calling some other mets on the phone...and you can just imagine the conversation (like...what are they thinking...etc...etc....). We were looking at the buoy data...and I then had to head up to the wing commander's office to tell him about a storm...that the NHC had not even admitted was there.

"Sir...there is a storm in the Gulf...and I think it will probably be about 50 kts when it comes in later today" (which is our threshold to move aircraft out).

"OK...what is the official track?"

"well...the NHC hasn't said anything about it yet...but I promise they will."

He had to trust me on that one. I forcasted a Freeport-San Luois Pass landfall at 11 AM...and the official advisories were started at 2...got a little lucky on it. :D

In June of 2001, I had yet to discover weather message boards. (I did that summer though)
My mom and my sister called me that morning and woke me up with the news that a tropical storm had formed in the GOM and was headed in this general direction (or toward Galveston area, don't really remember what the track was then) and I was like "What???" I had no clue there was even anything out there really worth watching. The locals were surprised as was the NHC. And then when it was classified as a tropical storm, I remember a comment somewhere along the lines of "that's the most pathetic looking tropical storm I've seen." Well, we all know what she did to the Houston and Beaumont areas, as well as Louisiana and beyond...
