Chiming in: I liked last year's organization better than previous years'. I like the separate pro analysis and talking tropics and preparation forums. I like the sticky-ed advisories and recon threads for each storm. In the general discussion threads, I don't care too much about what gets posted. It is hard to separate images from comments, since we're always commenting on the images. Beyond that, I think it would be hard to make finer-graded threads; people will forget what is prohibited in which thread and might get a little testy about violating new guidelines.
I like having images in messages, but appreciate it when they are scaled to no more than 800 pixels wide, so the whole thread doesn't have to be scrolled horizontally (with links to higher-res image if necessary).
Anyway, mods do great, the board worked pretty well last year considering all heck broke lose in the atmosphere, and I know I'll be spending a lot of time here this summer. <sigh>

Well, I got kinda tired of reading EVERYthing, and wanted to do the quote thing a couple of times but wanted to keep reading too. So here is where I end up, and this is as a dialup user. I loved what Luis did with advisories and recon as stickies that sometimes people commented on but basically were pure *news*. I get it in my email, but when it's serious, I'm doing the now now now thing, s2k or my email, which ever came first, what now? I wanted INFORMATION, not opinions, so I liked that very very much.
Also, as a dialup person who is paying a lot of attention when it matters, I MUCH prefer links. I appreciate what people post for the most part when it comes to graphics, but if I've seen it on one link, I don't want to see it five more times, plus the time it takes for it to load.
As to general discussion. There will never be a way to keep any hold on this. People have a zillion different reasons for going hyper or whatever, due to experience or lack of it. If all of that is in one thread, great. One thing. Last year, there were a few people who really needed help with specific situations...that wonderfully, this board helped with, knowing people in the area who could accomodate them, or doctors or nurses who could check out things or even insurance people in the aftermath. If there was some way to make an emergency thread?? I know that is parsing it a lot, but if I can, or someone else here who gladly would can help someone in dire need, if it wouldn't be lost in the general discussion threads, that would be great.
I really appreciate this thread a lot. This board is so diverse and meeting so many needs and desires, I know how difficult it must be to keep it steady on and I applaud those of you who work so hard to keep it right.
Happy Full Moon Night!! Enjoy!

after reading this whole thread i conclude that to some extent we might be giving a lot of the users too much credit. i for one like the user comments/discussion over the raw weather data as i am "tropically challenged" when it comes to that.
people like to discuss things and as an open board there is really not much to keep it from happening.
i did have a thought though...that is...is it possible that when one quotes a post with a large picture does it have to re-post the same pic?
for instance if i were to post the satellite map of storm XYZ with my thoughts, concerns, comments....and someone else wanted to comment on the SAME image that i posted is there any way to click the quote button but NOT have the pic be a part of it? (i know an intelligent/computer savvy user can figure this out)-- i mean is there any programming available that would allow the same pic in a post only 1 time per page of the thread???? it would save a lot of bandwith that way and the same pic would not be loaded up to 25 times per page (if everyone on that page quotes it)
i am being serious--is there any way possible to do that?.
i do like that the Hurricane Recovery and Aftermath thread was created as i feel that alleviated a lot of the posts from the Talkin Tropics section...
either way some users just won't "get it" and never read down 10 posts let alone to the next page to see if something has already been discussed...to me it is common courtesy not to repeat... (or at least i try my darndest

As far as I know, there isn't a way to do that. While it's a courtesy not to quote an image (I personally tend to remove the image and leave "img" in its place), some people don't get that. However, we can work as a team to keep people from doing that. When you see someone do that, send him/her a friendly PM asking them not to do that. After a few PMs, they are less likely to do it. Also, the mods could also help with that, but in the heat of things, that's not always possible.

The only way to do that is when you quote the post with the image, just take out the [img] [/img] tags, and it will post as a link. If someone wants to click on it, they'll get the image, but it won't be in the post. Of course everyone won't do this, but if people start doing that, and then asking others, etc. it should at least help alleviate the problem somewhat. Hopefully it will catch on.
