Google Earth & Weather/Sat overlays

#1 Postby mahicks » Wed Jul 27, 2005 11:18 am

Does anyone know where to go on the net to get overlays for Google earth such as floaters, model plots, etc..?? I have alot of good Radar links, but the floaters and some model plots would be awesome.

You can get a few of the model plots for the current tropical systems and invests here: http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/download.php?Number=51227

=========================================

For a good coverage of the tropics, I've found these images from LSU work well (mainly because the projection they use works with Google Earth -- i.e., not the Mercator projection used by NHC):

http://www.esl.lsu.edu/webpics/goes/Sto ... est_lc.jpg
http://www.esl.lsu.edu/webpics/goes/Sto ... est_ir.jpg
http://www.esl.lsu.edu/webpics/goes/Sto ... est_wv.jpg (extra-pretty red color scale)

These update about every 30 minutes.

The lat/long boundaries I use for the above:
North 37.755906°
South 6.220472°
East -49.401709°
West -100.555556°

=========================================

The next set is for the Gulf of Mexico, and these pictures update every 15 minutes.

http://www.esl.lsu.edu/webpics/goes/Sto ... est_lc.jpg
http://www.esl.lsu.edu/webpics/goes/Sto ... est_ir.jpg
http://www.esl.lsu.edu/webpics/goes/Sto ... est_wv.jpg

Lat/long boundaries for these:
North 32.885375°
South 17.094862°
East -72.903930°
West -99.043478°

=========================================

The last set is for the Atlantic east of 60 degrees longitude. These update only every 3 hours.

http://www.esl.lsu.edu/webpics/goes/Sto ... est_ir.jpg
http://www.esl.lsu.edu/webpics/goes/Sto ... est_wv.jpg

Lat/long boundaries for these:

North 40.197628°
South -0.237154°
East -9.747899°
West -60.210970°

I tried making my own with some of the Wunderground images but never could get them to scale right. Mississippi would always be a little longer than it should have been. :D Thanks mtm!

How are you guys getting your images to automatically update? I believe I have everything set up correctly, but they won't update automatically. I have to right click on each "place" and click "refresh".

Right click on the name of your "Place" and then click on "Edit." You should see a couple of boxes in there to change the Time-Based Refresh rate.

Ok...that's what I'm doing, but nothing is refreshing. I left it alone for a few hours (with 1 hour time updates), and came back, but nothing happened. I clicked on refresh, and bam...there were the new models. Hmmmm :roll:

In the "Edit Image Overlay" window, check the box next to "Advanced" at the bottom and then enter the coordinates accordingly as they're listed for each of the images above.

It's my professional opinion, then, that you're broken.

:D I'm sorry I can't be of more help.
