Report from the US Hurricane Conference

#1 Postby CrazyC83 » Sat Mar 25, 2006 11:58 pm

Some highlights:

A better understanding of why people do what they do is crucial to tailoring weather information in a way to get them to make the right decisions to protect themselves, according to scientists and researchers attending the 60th Interdepartmental Hurricane Conference in Mobile this week.

Because forecasters can't make people leave an area expected to be affected by a hurricane, "the message needs to provide information that describes what's going to happen," Williamson said, adding the objective is to save lives and reduce the impact on people.

Over the next 10 years, more attention must be focused on hurricane intensity and structure; improving track predictions; determining landfall impacts, and examining the potential benefits of using unmanned aerial vehicles in storms, the scientists said.

Among the other business, officials recommended that the names Katrina, Rita and Wilma be retired from the list of Atlantic storm names.

----------------

Comment on the retirement: I guess they figure that Cuba will ask to retire Dennis, as it was more destructive there. Emily and Stan were never going to be US requests anyway (Emily likely Mexico, Stan either Mexico or Guatemala).

To the NHC at least - he was definitely overshadowed by Katrina and Rita (and, to a lesser extent, Wilma).

However, Dennis did about $2-3 billion in damage in Cuba as well, and was the worst storm there in 40 years. Maybe they know that Havana has already sent the request?

The NHC, but under advisement and in cooperation with Cuba IMO, as they were impacted worse than the US.

Will Cuba make an announcement before the WMO meets, like the US did?

It does seem odd that the US wouldn't nominate Dennis just because Cuba has first dibs on it...since when has that stopped us when we're dealing with Cuba? Mexico surely would have requested that Wilma be retired, but we're requesting Wilma anyway...obviously Wilma caused much more US damage than Dennis, but both were billion-dollar storms. (If you're going to retire Lili....)

I think Cuba should. They got a harder hit than the U.S. getting hit by 150 mph winds.

It doesn't matter... both countries could and should request for it to be retired.

The US damage directly from Dennis doesn't seem to warrant retirement. Granted there was serious damage in some pocket areas near Navarre and Holley by the Sea, but a lot of it was picking off what Ivan had already weakened, and it was kind of a best case scenario for the region- small storm moving fast, and making landfall in an area that's largely federally-owned land.

I figure it's Cuba's call- they're the ones who really got whalloped from it.

I think BOTH countries should request retirement, because some inland areas of south Alabama that were spared by Ivan got slammed/destroyed in Dennis.

trust me...everytime i look at my yard or the new roof of the new chimney i remember Dennis. I am in no way comparing to Katrina or Rita but the 1-2 punch of Ivan and Dennis left scars around here that will be a long time healing.....but I have a home and a job and a safe family so I try not to complain!

Most forecasters probably wanted it that way if you consider how bad the forecasts were. The NHC did not have it rapidly intensifying that quickly before landfall. (Cuba) This storm highlighted the need for better itensification forecasts.

I'v not forgotten this at all...They where way off the bat.

In to back my case just look at when it crossed Cuba. It was hardly a cat1 on the other side. Then they did not forecast it to bomb again, But watch what it did. Also they never thought they would of found nearly a cat5 south of Cuba. Also you can say the same for Wilma!
