Interesting paper Derek. Good work. I have a few questions: Had Katrina ingested dry air to explain why her moisture content was less than Rita? Were both hurricanes sampled near the same location in the GOM at similar intensity?....MGC

both storms were sampled in the GOM only while at major hurricane intensity.

I could not use the data from Sept 23 for Rita because the model storm was already inland at that time, but excluding those results does not change the outcome

As for the dry air, it does not appear that it penetrated the core before 0Z 8/29, when sampling ended

as a note: future work is going to look at the wind fields, as well as the d(theta-e)/dz fields. I somewhat suspect based upon the dT/dz fields that increased stability in the rainband region also favors an EWRC

Interesting point, wind fields. Were the wind fields expanding or contracting during the observations of the respective hurricanes?....MGC

I will have to look at the winds to determine this. I hve not yet had the chance to look at the winds

I wish one of you brains can figure EWRC out. I can't see why a perfectly good looking hurricane self destructs. Keep us posted on this important research....MGC
