From NWS New Orleans Year End Weather Review
AUGUST 29TH...HURRICANE KATRINA! THIS EVENT WAS A LIFE ALTERING
EXPERIENCE FOR MUCH OF SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA...COASTAL MISSISSIPPI
AND COASTAL ALABAMA. THIS WAS THE DEADLIEST HURRICANE SINCE 1938
AND THE COSTLIEST DISASTER IN U.S. HISTORY. THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS
POPULATION WAS SET BACK TO 1850 CENSUS LEVELS AND THE INHABITABLE
PARTS OF TOWN EMULATE 1850 NEW ORLEANS. THE DEVASTATION ALONG THE
MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST WAS OVERWHELMING AS A RECORD STORM SURGE
GREATER THAN 25 FEET SURPASSED THE PREVIOUS MARK SET BY HURRICANE
CAMILLE. KATRINA HAS BECOME THE NEW BENCHMARK THAT ALL FUTURE
STORMS WILL BE COMPARED IN THE NEW ORLEANS AREA AND ALONG THE
MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST.
