Workers tear down the bus barn at Pearl River Community College after it was damaged by Hurricane Katrina.
At a glance
The following is a look at the impact of Hurricane Katrina on the Pearl River Community College.
Buildings
M.R. White Coliseum, severe structural damage
Auditorium of historic Moody Hall, demolished
Lamar and Marion residence halls, major damage
Vehicle maintenance shop, destroyed
Hancock Center, wiped out
Hattiesburg facilities, minimal damage
Estimated cost
More than $50 million
Student losses
Between 400 and 500 of the college's 4,300 students have left.
Drops in enrollment reduce paid student tuition and state funding.
Other factors
The tax base in Hancock and Pearl River counties that helps support the college was seriously affected.
On the positive side, the college is in its first year of business interruption insurance and will be eligible to recoup some of the costs from enrollment decreases.
Making up time
Time lost: three weeks
Makeup plan: added five full days including two-day fall break this week, Wednesday before Thanksgiving and two days at end of semester; lengthened classes
