Agreed... the waters around Florida were and are very warm. I received a lot of rain from Jerry as well. Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade and especially southwest Florida counties got a lot of rain.
I've noticed that, even in the past, westerly shear has protected Florida from storms that made landfall in the state by preventing them from getting stronger. Even last year, such an occurrence happened with Frances, where westerly shear weakened it from a strong Category Four storm with 145MPH winds down to a 105MPH Category Two storm. Why does shear often (fortunately) protect Florida like this on some (but not all) occasions?
