Is Rita going annular?

#1 Postby beninva1 » Wed Sep 21, 2005 1:00 pm

The last few frames she seems to be losing her bands and the eye is growing

Nah, she's got feeder bands streaming in from south of cuba. Annular is basically a 'closed' margin, with little direct input via feeder bands.

While I'm far from an expert, I would wager yes. Pretty classic donut presentation on IR, and you can see what appear to be mesovortices in the RAMDIS visibile floater.

Will say this.

That eye went from somewhat ragged to almost a perfect circle in those last couple of frames.

it's still got a long ways to go before it's annular

there is still way too much banding with the storm, everywhere really except for the NW quadrant

Seems to me I remeber someone in a previous annular thread comparing the way one looks to a saw blade you would buy at the home depot for your circular skil saw. It looks likes like its getting there to me. There are still a few bands swinging out, but she looks pretty darn symmetric to me. Almost perfect.

Edit: Another image, she has nothing like a closed margin. Not even close to it at this time.

My understanding was that there were three criteria for being annular: large round eye, intraeye vortices, and a symmetrical "dinner plate" appearance. She has all three. The relevant part IMO is the round eye with internal vortices which prevent ERCs and make for a more stable hurricane.

Not,

but it is a very stable type of hurricane in that it has the large core. Unlike Dennis, this one will be slow to weaken over the shelf water
