everyone talks about how shallow the water is in the northern Gulf so I was wondering how deep the water is in the brenton Sound area where all that storm surge piled up at and demolished the coast.

Looks like depths are in the range of 10-15 feet. (From NOAA nautical chart #11363) Here is an online chart:

http://map.marineplanner.com/mapping/chart/chart.cfm?lat=30.0412163448&lon=-89.1781242242&chartid=11363&typ=PN&txt=

The chart is really zoomed in close. Click on the scale at the right side to zoom out.

 you can go out miles and miles and the water is less then 20 ft  No wonder why the surge is so bad. Some sections it looks you can go a ways out and the water is only up to your head.
