Just been very lucky. 40 years will be the anniversary of Betsy on Sept 11th. Would it be weird if a cane hit New Orleans on the 40th anniversary of Betsy? I better shut up. Don't want to jinx anybody. LOL. I have this feeling that Louisiana especially the Houma-New Orleans area will get one soon enough.

Not me. But, everyone's attitude around here. I talked to people around here and they seem to think just because we always dodged the bullets before, we always will. They think that a hurricane will never happen here again. Especially since most were not born for Betsy and never went through the fury of a real hurricane.

There's a lot of people like that, everywhere. Apparently, it takes one to hit them for them to realize they have as much chance of getting hit as anyone else along the coast. Landfall predictions mean nothing...it just takes one in your area.

Houston? Houston?????

Sorry, major pet peeve of mine, but Houston doesn't exactly get "hit," does it? The Houston/Galveston area gets hit. The island gets hit first, followed by a number of other towns (Bayou Vista, Hitchcock, League City, Texas City, Friendswood, League City). The coastal city is where "landfall" is historically marked. Houston is not exactly "coastal." Sure, they'd feel the brunt of the storm as much as we could. But what are the chances of a "direct" hit? Could a hurricane actually travel up through Galveston Bay without affecting the island first and then hit the east side of Houston as the first landfall point?

Stranger things have happened. Remember Charley making the right turn to go up Charlotte Harbor last year to go over as much water as possible?

New York???

Has there ever been a major hurricane up there?

It would have to be FLYING north at 30+ mph.

Five cat 3, or higher, hurricanes have struck Western Long Island since settlements where first built in 1635. Also Cat. 2 Carol in 1954 hit Southern New England. With that stated, while it is rare for a Cat. 3 (or 4) to hit the Manhattan/Long Island area, it is FAR FROM IMPOSSIBLE. Another thing to keep in mind (beside population density in this area) is the fact that because hits (little own major hits) happen so infrequently, many people know next to nothing about preparing for major hurricanes. Sea water flooding the subway systems cold electrocuted up to a MILLION people alone, truly frightening

Of course a major could hit NY! What was that storm last year or year before that was a major all the way to New Foundland? Granted, it was the farthest North Major on record, aka the last 100 years but were talking LONG TERM AVG's IMHO!

I say Cape Hatteras, not a major city, but extremely likely to get hit.

Take a look at the 1947 historical tracks. If there was a repeat performance of that storm from 9/4 to 9/21 to occur next month, we could pretty much kiss it all goodbye.

I have the stomach-turning feeling that 92L could come shockingly close to the track of #4 of 1947, just not in strength (tho that's more of a wishful thinking).

Anyways, just like Patrick said, that one really could be a birrova final straw, let's just pray it won't happen.

Here again, a non-scientific conclusion, I will go with Houston. Can you say, "$10.00 a gallon?" I am concerned every year for Miami, Houston, New Orleans and let's hope the Big Easy doesn't have a streak like the Alabama/West Florida Panhandle....

Cut it out, think positive- I say that the U.S is safe for the rest of the year. Why does everyone have to be so pessimistic. I'm sick of what I am hearing. My beliefs are that all the coming storms will be fish, and the U.S will be safe.
