Remember Ivan swerving to miss Kingston, Jamaica?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Remember Ivan swerving to miss Kingston, Jamaica?

#1 Postby BReb » Sun Aug 28, 2005 4:56 pm

Ivan was barreling down on Kingston Jamaica as a strong category 4- then for no apparent reason it took a sharp westward turn right before hitting land.

This led to some to theorize that hurricanes may seek to avoid land. I'm hoping something similar may happen with Katrina and that it may swerve west as it approaches land, sparing NOLA the brunt of the storm. Maybe grasping for straws, but I have a hard time swallowing the fact that tens of thousands of people may be drowning as we watch the radar tomorrow morning.

I agree. I am hoping and praying that it will turn east some to avoid New Orleans. Its happened with other storms.

The problem is that no matter where Katrina goes it will be CATASTROPHIC unless someting no one can forsee happens to weaken her in a massive fashion.

Actually... to spare New Orleans it needs to go east... west would take it just west of the city and put them in a worse situation than is expected now... but a turn east spells destruction for areas in MS/AL.
