Looking better for panhandle

#1 Postby Opal storm » Sun Aug 28, 2005 12:48 pm

Looks like the florida panhandle will be spared of a direct hit and the devastating eyewall.Hurricane warning has not been extended into our area and it looks like Katrina is following the NHC perfectly. If that is the case,we will only see T.S force winds.Looks like the big threat for us will be storm surge.

Hurlburt Field Storm Preps

#2 Postby DarthWader » Sun Aug 28, 2005 1:43 pm

While a direct hit is looking less likely, a possible glancing blow has Hurlburt Field personnel taking action. This is excerpted from the latest Battle Staff Directive..

The decision to evacuate 16 SOW aircraft has been made. L-Hour is today, 28 Aug 05 at 1100L/1600Z. Hurricane Katrina is a major storm and has the potential to make landfall as a strong Cat-4, possible Cat-5 storm. Commanders are directed to ensure they have made 100% contact with all families of deployed personnel—PRE-ADVON, aircraft evacuation members OEF/OIF, AEF, TDY, other. Winds may exceed 50 knots in the local area. Ensure all toys, small items and moveable objects are pickup/ tied down.

Hurlburt Field personnel and their families should be preparing to depart. However, the Wing Commander has not ordered personnel evacuation at this time. Further guidance will be directed through the BSD, as environmental conditions change.

Santa Rosa County has directed an evacuation for low elevation areas and Navarre beach. If you are in a low elevation area or Navarre beach, the SRC has opened the HWC gym as a shelter. Personnel must bring ALL items they will need to include, food, water, sleeping bags, medication, etc.

Preparation of homes, vehicles and personal possessions should be accomplished at this time. All loose items must be secured to ensure they do not become airborne projectiles, to include pets. If an evacuation is executed, pets will not be left on the property.
