Why do we have to wait until 5:30 to get the 5pm update. I don't want to hear the overworked and under staffed excuse.

Because it's not the 5pm update, but rather the 5:30pm update.
It's not a matter of overworked/understaffed... it's a matter of 5:30 is their normal issuance time.

Well, here's the deal. Not a great deal of effort is really put into the TWO, compared to the advisory packages. Lets look back at last week - they were warning on four systems: Irene, Fernanda, Greg, and 10L. All of these are due at 03Z, 09Z, 15Z, and 21Z, respectively.
Since last minute information can change an advisory bulletin, ie: recon confirms an upgrade from tropical storm to hurricane, by pushing the TWO back 30 minutes saves them one additional thing to ticker with at the last minute.
With that said, to my knowledge, the reason of them pushing forward the 10:30pm TWO from 11:30pm is for media reasons. This advance allows the media outlets 30 minutes to prepare before the nightly news to go over the tropics. Regardless, their current system is probably the best -- speaking from the forecaster's point of view.

Nonetheless they still manage to work around that stuff.
<RICKY>
May I suggest you seek your hurricane information from other sources. Channel 7 would not be a place I would turn to for hurricane info unless you just want to stare at Loreta.

Begin rant.
Do you guys notice that Ch. 4 seems to be leading its newscasts with something related to the weather like almost every day...lately they just talk about how hot it is....well, hello, it's August. It's South Florida. What did they expect? Frost? This is not news. Nor is it news when we have a lot of thunderstorms around and they lead the newscast with "Wicked Weather" or some pretentious bs they make it out to be. Unless there's tornadoes, I don't give a rat's pitooty.
End rant.
