Yes, most of the GOM is running 1-2 above normal.

Something to keep in mind, in general, the monthly average temp. listed would occur on about the 15th of the month. So - the August "normal" values should be that right now - and the actuals are all a little on the warm side.

I agree. They are a tad warm for this time of year. Alot of energy left to be spent if something does make it into the GOM this year..... :D

Some people have stated that SST's arent the only equation in hurricane development, which is true. For those who have said that, I couldnt agree more. However, I think what dhweather (the orginator of this post) was implying was: If a storm is already formed and were to get enter the GOM under favorable conditions with these high water temps the storm has the potential to bomb.... Are the SST's above normal? Sure they are we have known this for months!

Sanibel, we have also had alot of electricity in the air on the Central Gulf Coast. Nearly every day there has been alot of lightening moving onshore from the GOM... But how does this relate to hurricanes? If the electric energy in the air is more abundant does this mean that there is more cyclonic energy in the GOM?

Thank God "Methane Mike" isn't here for that question! :D I don't really know.


Our Gulf temperature is the highest our local weatherman has seen at 92*!
