Do you know anyone who uses your local shelters?

Do any of you actually use your local hurricane evacuation shelters? Just curious, as I don't have any personal friends or relatives that use them. Ours are always pretty packed, so obviously someone uses them (which is good), I just don't know anybody who does.

The only storm we've evacuated for since I've lived in Florida (1984) was Charley last year. We went to the in-laws house which is in the mid-county area.

The key word here is LOCAL. There are no LOCAL shelters. EMS and FEEMA have decided that the safest place for a shelter is 60 miles north of here.

Wow, that is quite a way to have to go. I live just a few miles from the beach, and the high school that they use for evacuations is less than a mile from me.

I rode out Camille in a shelter at Keesler AFB, but haven't been in one since.

The building I work in at Stennis Space Center is a hurricane shelter, and it is always full, but I've never stayed in it, and don't plan to.

shelters

When I lived in Charleston, I had a coworker whose family used the shelter rather matter-of-factly. They lived in a mobile home and had been through Hugo, so for them going to the shelter was like going to the post office. They just dropped in whenever they had a reason to be there.
