Indonesian floods force thousands to flee

#1 Postby senorpepr » Mon Jan 23, 2006 8:39 am

Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate their homes in Indonesia after more than 24 hours of heavy rains triggered flash floods and mudslides in several regions.

The Antara news agency reports flash floods have sent torrents of mud and water rushing down the eastern slope of Mount Rinjani on Lombok island.

More than 1,800 people have been evacuated from two villages in the East Lombok subdistrict of Sambelia.

Another 300 are reported to be trapped in the village of Batusele, some of them forced to sleep on their roofs.

"People at a number of locations cannot be yet evacuated because the locations are surrounded by quite high levels of water," local government spokesman H Sihabuddin told the ElShinta radio.

Floods that caused local rivers to burst their banks have also been reported in three subdistricts on Sumbawa island, just east of Lombok.

The Media Indonesia daily says one village on Sumbawa is under two meters of water.

Flooding is also reported in Besuki, East Java where the Lubawang river has swollen, prompting thousands of people from six villages to flee to safer ground.

Heavy rains in the monsoon season have caused floodings and landslides in various Indonesian regions in recent weeks.

At least 75 people were killed after a landslide hit a village in Central Java earlier this month following days of heavy rains.

Flash floods killed at least 77 people and swept away hundreds of houses in several East Java villages on New Year's Eve.

The event occurred on 22 Jan 2006. I don't have a link to the article since I get these world weather events e-mailed to me at work. However, do some Google and you should find success.
