Wind hampers Tas firefighters

#1 Postby senorpepr » Wed Oct 13, 2004 8:26 am

Firefighters are waiting for gusty conditions to ease before they can control a bushfire on Tasmania's east coast.
The fire began yesterday afternoon near Bicheno and is believed to have been caused by embers from sheep carcasses that had been burnt on a farm some days ago.

The fire has already burned about 1,100 hectares and threatened homes at Courland Bay late yesterday.
District Officer Gerald Crawford says firefighters are now working to protect more houses.
"We're doing some back burning on the north-eastern edge on Harvey Farm Road to protect structures in that area," he said.

"With the rest of the fire we're letting it continue to burn until later on tonight when the weather conditions ease and we'll be able to do some back burning and contain it from traveling further south."
