AP, HANOI

Oct 11: Floods and storms have so far killed 36 people in the four Mekong Delta provinces bordering Cambodia during this year's rainy season, officials said Monday.

Twenty-three children were among the dead from seasonal flooding and tropical storms over the past two months in the provinces of Kien Giang, An Giang, Dong Thap and Long An, said an official at the Ho Chi Minh City-based floods and storms control department on condition of anonymity. Floods have submerged nearly 19,000 houses, forcing nearly 2,250 families to leave their homes, he said. Flooding has also damaged thousands of hectares of rice fields and fruit orchards, and forced nearly 32,000 students to stay home, he said.
